You’ve made it through the home buying process and now finally own a home with a lawn! Congratulations! As you’ve come to find out, owning a home comes with more responsibilities than you had when you were renting. You have to replace and repair your own appliances, you can freely work on do it yourself projects, and now you can mow your lawn!
We wanted to write a little guide to help you new first time homeowners with transitioning into your new homes and new responsibilities. While we won’t be identifying grass clippings, grass blades, and other types of grasses, we’ll be giving over all tips to help keep your healthy lawn looking just as good as your home!
Buy Lawn Maintenance Tools Second Hand If You Can
If you are able to buy lawn maintenance tools for cheap, you should definitely go for it. Lawn care tools can be very expensive, especially if you’re looking to grow the highest quality lawn that you can. Often times, you can find lawn maintenance tools for cheap from people who are selling their home and are looking to downsize. We’d recommend also checking with the sellers of the home you purchased to see if you can help with minimizing their moving expenses by taking maintenance tools off of their hands!
Don’t Cut Your Lawn Too Short
Even though it sounds like cutting your lawn short means you don’t have to mow it as often, you can encourage the growth of weeds while damaging your grass roots. Mowing your lawn frequently while keeping your grass blades long help keep your lawn looking thick and healthy. Also, if you continue to cut the grass too short, it may have trouble getting further nutrients to help with growing again.
Additionally, try mowing your grass only when it’s dry. Mowing wet grass doesn’t harm your lawn, but it does create a real headache when you have to unclog your lawn mower. Wet grass can very easily get stuck everywhere, creating a thick layer around your mower and fall off in clumps. Clumps of mowed, wet grass that are left on your lawn can actually kill grass.
Wet grass also has a tendency to not be cut as evenly as dry grass as well. When you step or ride over wet grass, it has a tendency to not bounce back up as readily as dry grass, making it easy to have uneven cuts by your mower blades.
Water Your Lawn In The Morning
Good timing with watering your lawn can make a huge difference in the quality of your lawn. Water that sits on your grass for too long can invite disease and insects to your grass, resulting in it turning brown. However, if you water your lawn in the morning, the sun takes care of drying your grass for you! This also helps with having your grass get the water and sunlight it needs before you decide to cut it later on in the day!
Prevent Crab Grass and Weeds with Weed Killers
We’d suggest using weed killers in the early Spring to help with eliminating crabgrass and weeds, and stopping them from taking deep root in your lawn. By staying on top of preventing crabgrass, you can keep your grass looking green and lush without needing to pull weeds for weed control.
Fertilize Your Lawn
Healthy growing grass needs lots of sunlight, water, and nutrients. The best way to provide the nutrients that give grass that wonderful, green, healthy look, is by giving it the proper fertilizer. We’d recommend fertilizing your lawn in the Spring, late Spring, and late Summer. You want to stay away from fertilizing your grass when it’s way too hot or too cold.
Beware of Dull Lawn Mower Blades
Dull lawn mower blades can really be dangerous for your grass! Instead of getting clean cuts on the grass blades, dawn lawn mower blades may actually pull grass from the root, leaving clumps of bare soil and clumps of grass everywhere.
If the blade of grass isn’t pulled, the dull blades can create tears in the grass. These tears can serve as entry ways for diseases and insects to help with unsightly discoloration and ultimately killing your grass. We’d recommend sharpening or replacing your lawn mower blades at least once a mowing season, especially if you are cutting your lawn frequently.
Hopefully we’ve given you some lawn care tips that you can use when it comes to maintaining your lawn! While lawn care is something that you may have not done before, we’re positive that you’ll become the owner of a beautiful and healthy yard in no time!
